Ichiro Saito – Beyond the Paper

紙の向こうに or Beyond the Paper shows works by the Japanese artist Ichiro Saito (Iiyama City, 1938): a contemporary artist who was confronted with his own cultural background in New York. From then on he is dedicated to ‘washi’: the making of paper according to a traditional and intensive process.

Over Ichiro Saito

Na zijn opleiding als kunstschilder aan de Tama Art Universiteit in Tokio werkte Saito van 1961 tot 1964 als assistent van Ichiro Fukazawa, die in de jaren dertig het surrealisme in Japan introduceerde. Ook kwam Saito in aanraking met de Anpo beweging die in de jaren zestig, met onder meer Lee Ufan, de gevestigde orde bestreed. Uit financiële noodzaak trad Saito in dienst van Toppan Printing waar hij gedurende meer dan dertig jaar werkte als vormgever en ontwerper, in het bijzonder van printpatronen op plaatmateriaal. Zijn ontwerpen zijn tot op de dag van vandaag te vinden in decoraties van treinen, vliegtuigen, gebouwen en vele andere toepassingen.
