About the exhibition
Henk and Anja van den Berg run into the work of Jan Worst by chance at TEFAF in 2006. They bought the painting Red Interior (2000), the beginning of what became a collection of his work. A year later they acquired the painting The Egoist (2006), which was lend to the Kunsthal Rotterdam for the exhibition The Adventure of Reality! International Realism. In subsequent years, the collection expanded.
Past and present are tightly interwoven in Jan Worst’s paintings. Upon closer inspection, the historical interiors reveal a variety of modern elements. His painting technique betrays a similar complex duality between current influences and a continuation of past traditions. Jan Worst tries to liberate himself from a historical framework by breaking with time’s unambiguous nature.
