Freijsen is inspired by things that being ignored by most people. Between 2005 and 2016 she photographed stains and other signs of decay in The Netherlands and France. Freijsen has a strongly evolved eye for the unusual beauty of the undesirable.
The carefully classified stains from Freijsen’s photo archive are the inspiration for het visual work. The artist is mostly known for her hand-tuftend carpets, that were created during a collaboration of many year with the TextielMuseum in Tilburg. During a labor-intensive proces, the mosses and stains are translated into carpets.
Tufting is a traditional technic. Through a woven base, wool threads are shot in a U-shape with the help of an air pressure gun. The technic is named after the sound of the gun (tufttuft).
