Martin Mull Four Seasons Los Angeles, Winter (2009)
On view at the Bergarde Stable
Most people might know Martin Mull as an actor, but he originally studied fine arts at Rhode Island School of Design. Mull’s paintings recall the post-war America from the 1950s. He translate images from old photos and books to oil on canvas. This explains why his paintings feel a bit like collages. Color and grayscale images come together in a new composition. The work raises questions. Why is the woman naked? What is her relation to the man?
The beholder can decide for himself.
