Rob Scholte Lucky Rice (sold) (1993)
On view at the Bergarde Stable
Dutch artist Rob Scholte worked in Japan during the early 1990s. Here, he became fascinated by billboards with a happy illustration of the product that commend themselves. For the Questionmark series, Scholte translated these remarkable ads into paint. With this action, he gives a famous part op the Japanese streetview a new context. From advertisement to art. Lucky Rice is part of this series. The happy rice grain with blue cap and matching shoes smiles at the beholder. The meaning of the Japanese characters will get lost in translation for most of the European beholders, but from the colors and depiction one can give their own interpretation.
