Mark Alexander Self Portrait III (1999)

A cute little boy stares at the beholder. He holds a spoon next to his mouth and at his chin a drop of porridge hangs on his chin. The endearing little man is the artist himself. In art history artists normally represent themselves as confident adults, but not Alexander. His self-portrait is that of a innocent child.

Mark Alexander painted The Baby Paintings between 1996 and 1999. It is a coherent serie of five images, that seem to take place during the same meal. Because of Alexander’s labor intensive painterly style, the realistic work is reminiscent of a photo.
